Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is an incredible souvenir ring from a soldier in the WWI Marine Corps 2nd Infantry Division. Ring is not magnetic, and appears to either be enamel or painted. It features an Indian head and VERDUN on the face with Rhine 19 on one side and the other is difficult to read. The ring measures 19mm in diameter.

Almost 100 years after its inception, the 2nd Division’s distinctive star and Indian head insignia is perhaps the most sought after of all of the shoulder patches used by the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). There are a number of reasons for this … One being the 2nd Division’s unmatched fighting record during the Great War. Another is that it was the only AEF division to be composed of Army, Navy and Marine Corps personnel. Still another is because the shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) was authorized to be made from six different colors of cloth that were cut into fourteen different shapes, geometric and otherwise. Another reason could be the innumerable variations of the design found within the framework of regulation shapes and colors. The diversity of which can be seen in this montage of WW I era 2nd Division insignia. The 4th Brigade was originally formed during World War I as the 4th Marine Brigade. It served in France as one of the two infantry brigades of the
U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division and all Marine combat units in World War I were organized under the 4th Marine Brigade. The 4th fought actions at Belleau Wood, Soissons and Meuse-Argonne campaign.
